New VAT Registration Service
HMRC’S new VAT Registration Service (VRS), which must be used for all new VAT registration applications, went live for agents on 1 August 2022.
HMRC hopes that the VRS will speed up the registration process, which has experienced considerable delays from time to time, and improve security.
One of the key changes is that businesses will be automatically signed up to Making Tax Digital for VAT as part of the registration process.
HMRC has confirmed that agents will have the same functionality in the new service to save applications for up to four weeks before submitting them.
Businesses must still register by post using form VAT1 if they wish to:
- Apply for a ‘registration exception’
- Join the Agricultural Flat Rate Scheme
- Register divisions or business units of a body corporate under separate VAT numbers.
