Introduction to the Property Tax Team
As per our further rollout of company team spotlights: introducing the Property Tax Team. This team has recently featured on The Loop in June/July for Focus Estate Management article and the HMRC Digital Registration from August 5 articles.
This introduction may help wider teams Group-wide to recognise Property Tax core team members, their remit and services they offer. The team will then continue to provide weekly updates leading towards a monthly update from the world of Property Tax from September onwards.
Tom Butterworth, Head of Property Taxes
Tom is a specialist property tax adviser with mixed tax expertise. With almost 20
years’ experience in the Tax and Accountancy sector, he leads the Property Tax
team at LB Group and is a Stamp Duty Land Tax expert.
Before joining LB Group, he had experience of running several personally owned businesses before establishing a small boutique Tax Consultancy firm providing Tax advice and Accountancy services to businesses and investors in the property sector for nearly 10 years.
Notable work highlights include: working on settlements and enquiries with HMRC having
successfully settled a number of disguised remuneration cases and non-compliance by offshore
entities through the Worldwide Disclosure facilities. These resulted in great value-added benefits
for his clients in agreeing common sense settlements with HMRC. Other notable matters include
highly contentious and complex SDLT cases and de-enveloping of offshore property.
Tom’s recent wins with HMRC include: Successfully claiming Multiple Dwellings Relief on a shepherd’s hut as a qualifying dwelling; and Delivering SDLT savings for a client of over £250,000 after putting forward a case for the
garden and grounds of a property to qualify as mixed use.
Martin Quinton, Property Taxes Adviser
Martin started his Tax career in 2013 at a local Accountancy firm where he
successfully obtained his ATT qualification. Since qualifying, Martin has gained a wealth of experience within a variety of firms, working across both private client and corporation tax teams. This ensured he has developed a broad knowledge of Tax across the whole client base.
Prior to joining LB Group, Martin worked at a local firm of solicitors where he gained invaluable exposure to the legal sector and how this works alongside Taxation advice.
Patrick O’Brien, Property Taxes Support
Patrick is a Stamp Duty Land Tax specialist who has over 10 years’ experience advising on property tax matters.
Prior to working at LB Group, Patrick worked for an international business where
his role was to undertake research and provide advice and solutions.
Patrick trained as a tax adviser in an international accountancy practice and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Patrick also has experience working in industry for 10 years in tax advisory and commercial management roles.
Patrick enjoys advising on property tax matters and, in addition to his SDLT expertise, he can advise on Capital Gains Tax, Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings and Income Tax.
Charlie Hammett, Property Taxes Support/Business Support
Charlie has a keen interest in tax and currently supports the Property Tax Team in delivering a high level of service.
