Fundraising for the National Autistic Society!

Firstly, I apologise for the long post, however in the spirit of next week, the whole essence is about raising awareness and acceptance!

Next week is National Autism Acceptance week.  A cause close to my heart and a subject society still sees as taboo.

My son George was diagnosed with Autism when he was four years old during lockdown.  There is no history of Autism in the family and so we have navigated our way through the complex, beautiful journey that George has taken us on as his parents the last 8 (nearly 9) years.  We are immensely proud of him and the struggles he has overcome.

George struggles with communication, social awareness and sensory issues.  He is supported at school by a TA and an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan) to aid his development.  His quirky ways, his intelligent and creative mind and fascination with certain subjects over the years has opened our eyes into the world of Autistic people.

Shockingly only 29% of Autistic people are in any form of employment, a figure that as a parent to a son with Autism, raises concerns naturally about his future and what that may look like.

Autistic people are bright, thrive on structure and routine and have a unique way of seeing the world. They are amazing at remembering facts, problem solving and are a real asset to any team and should not be overlooked.

As LB Group grows in size, I personally hope we continue to be inclusive, and adapt and learn to celebrate and embrace each other’s differences.  By creating a space where we can learn from those on the Autism spectrum, we can empower them to reach their potential in an environment where they feel supported, safe, appreciated and respected as individuals.

Next week George and I will be walking 5K Spectrum Colour Walk while on holiday in Norfolk to raise awareness and acceptance of Autism!

Whilst George is very excited to be fundraising and has asked his school for help, I kindly ask if anyone at LB would like to donate (no matter how small), by clicking on the link below please:

If there is anyone who would like to know more about Autism, I am always happy to discuss this subject.  You can find expert advice by visiting the ‘National Autistic Society’ website.

Thank you for reading.
